Ingrid Bjoner

Ingrid Bjoner's voice combined lyrical warmth with a steely core, giving her the rare versatility to excel in everything from Mozart and Verdi to Wagner and Strauss. This compilation highlights that breadth with arias and excerpts from Don Giovanni, Fidelio, Aida, La Forza del destino, Turandot, Feuersnot, Die Frau ohne Schatten, Elektra, Die Walküre, Siegfried, Götterdämmerung, and Tristan und Isolde.

The set also features distinguished collaborators including Cesare Valletti, Regina Resnik, Marcel Cordes, Grace Hoffman, Birgit Nilsson, Jean Cox, and Ruth Hesse.

Bleeding chunks

She sounds better than she did when I heard her do Isolde in Duesseldorf with Connell Byrne under Gunter Wich in January 1978. On most of these extracts she is steadier than she was there and her sense of pitch is better than I remember it too. She certainly was a very good Heldensopran and it is good to have these examples from the 60s and 70s recorded (presumably off the radio) in her prime. The coloratura is a bit laboured in the Mozart but the Wagner extracts on disc 2 are well worth hearing. However there is little continuity; we leap from opera to opera with rapidity and many of the cutoffs are rather insensitive. Sound is not bad.

wonderful. Why did this woman get sidelined ? She is excellent in such a wide repertoire ?
