Die Heirat wider Willen

Twelve years after the success of Hänsel und Gretel, Engelbert Humperdinck reunited with conductor Richard Strauss to craft a comic opera, this time setting a libretto penned by the composer's wife. The resulting work draws from the buffo tradition while weaving in musical allusions to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, all within a framework that reveals a distinctly 20th-century sensitivity to harmonic color and formal design. Though it may not ascend to the enduring stature of Hänsel und Gretel, the score offers a compelling and often inventive listening experience.

The cast assembled here rises to the occasion with assurance, most notably a young Hans Hopf, whose portrayal of Graf von Montfort displays both vocal vigor and stylistic finesse.
