Giulio Cesare
Montserrat Caballé provides a rare glimpse of her talents in baroque opera with this recording. While purists might balk at some of her choices, Caballé's renowned vocal control allows her to spin truly luxurious melodic lines. Kostas Paskalis brings grace and refinement to the title role, and Huguette Tourangeau is excellent as Sesto. However, the performance features numerous cuts, and the order of the arias has been completely rearranged.

I know its a pirate recording, but with a little trouble you could have improved the quality of the sound ! The cast is excellent !

Years ago, I played Giulio Cesare for a non-opera-loving friend. “This is opera?” she said. “But it’s…pretty!” So just remember baroque opera is the gateway drug. I love this recording, especially Caballe. I’m used to a contralto Caesar, but I cottoned on to Paksalis very quickly. The sound is recessed—the principals are in another room—but clear. Turn up the gain you’ll be fine. Somebody somewhere is singing his recitative in English. Isn’t he? Someone tell me I’m not imagining this.
