Interesting opera - definitely for Scotto fans!
Scotto in lovely voice as the heroine although even at this early stage it can harden under pressure but did not spoil my enjoyment. Strong supporting cast in a rarely heard and interesting opera (even though anachronistically it is sung in Italian and the music really calls out for the French language).

Rare Gounod
Unfamiliar work bought to experience Scotto in something different. Worth a listen.

Gounod's lovely under recorded and under performed opera gets four star treatment here. There is much lovely music: an attractive Faust like duet to open and a beautiful aria In act one for Baucis, a delicately beautiful chorus to open the second act,to mention a few highlights in this completely attractive score.Scotto at the beginning of her illustrious caeer is very much a lyric soprano, expressive and moving as Baucis. The loveable baritone Rolando Panerai also at at the beginning of his career makes a wonderfully ingratiating and oily God.Alvinio has an attractive lyric tenor as Philemon. The sound is this radio broadcast is very good. There is some distortion however on Scotto in her excellent second act aria.A small complaint.
