Operas like Le Médecin malgré lui by Gounod are exactly the kind of recordings I love to find. This opera has languished in obscurity for well over a hundred years. Perhaps the reason is the ridiculous libretto (based on Molière) which defies comprehension. However the musical component seems pretty successful. Berlioz praised the work saying "Gounod is at his best." The music is very charming and straight forward. It would be interesting if it were revived in a staged production. The cast is very good and features Swiss tenor, Eric Tappy as well as Italians Paolo Montarsolo and Italo Tajo. The sound is excellent.
