Iphigénie en Tauride

Anny Konetzni brings a Wagnerian scale to the title role of Iphigénie en Tauride (sung in German), making a compelling case for a more dramatic approach to Gluck's opera. Even the most staunch purists would be hard-pressed to deny the visceral excitement that Konetzni's performance brings to the piece. Under the baton of Erich Kleiber, the production benefits from a perfect balance of Mozartian elegance and Wagnerian power, providing a solid musical foundation to support the operatic intensity.

Wonderful Gluck

I love this recording. I was expecting something rather old-fashioned and perhaps rather heavy, but in fact Kleiber conducts with great pace and energy, and the dances go at an incredible lick! For a performance given over 80 years ago it sounds remarkably up-to-date to me. Konetzni is great in the title role, passionate and moving with some glorious top notes. The rest of the cast does a good job too, and I think the quality of the recording is good for 1937.
