A Life for the Tsar

This performance of A Life for the Tsar is sung in Italian, and while that may seem incongruous with Glinka's Russian roots, it reveals the bel canto influence woven throughout his score. A young Virginia Zeani shines in the role of Antonida, and Boris Christoff—no stranger to portraying Tsars—brings his commanding bass to the title role with impressive authority.

Nice record of a “ fringe” opera

The performances are quite fine, as we would expect from this stellar cast. The only problem is the piece itself, although this is a totally subjective opinion. This is not as compelling as Ruslan and Ludmilla, the better known work. While there are some finer moments, there is a lot of “fat” in this score. Perhaps with some judicious editing, the opera would be a better experience. It is nice to have a record of this piece however.
