Messa da Requiem

This performance of the Verdi Requiem features a standout quartet of soloists, with Gianni Raimondi nearly stealing the show in a radiant and expressive "Ingemisco." His tenor is both elegant and full of vocal warmth, offering a striking balance of lyrical sensitivity and operatic weight. Marcella Pobbe contributes a luminous soprano, her angelic tone underpinned by a genuine feel for Verdi's dramatic line and phrasing.

The ensemble is cohesive and committed throughout, offering a reverent yet impassioned reading of Verdi's monumental score.

Great Performance, Excellent Sound!

This Verdi Requiem may be a bit of a Sleeper in the Opera Depot catalogue. The four soloists are known for their singing in other roles, but are not (generally) as well known as other singers in this work. Though not flawless, they are an engaging quartet with a terrific sense of how this work is supposed to "go", led by a conductor who had this music, this style in his blood. It matters that the performing forces are all Italian.Pobbe sings like an angel with a beautiful floated high B-flat at the end of the a capella section of the final "Liberal me". She easily soars to a clarion top C when the composer asks her to and blends well with Danieli's sumptuous mezzo in their duets. Raimondi offers a stirring "Ingemisco", fervently sung and phrased like a champion. A few minor musical errors betray either nervousness or a lack of familiarity with the score. Mazzoli sounds like appropriately priest-like and is very musical. Rossi conducts a performance that never sounds rushed, but is quick enough to be contained in one disc. The chorus is splendidly dramatic, the orchestra supporting all with drama and class. The sound, from a RAI broadcast, is very good. For those who love this music and these singers.
