Andrea Chénier
In 1961 Giuseppe Di Stefano was at his best, particularly in the dramatic repertoire. Although there are slight traces of strain (which would become exacerbated throughout the 1960s) his assent to the top of his voice is thrilling. Irma González's career was centered mostly in Mexico City, but her artistry was anything but provincial. As Maddalena, she brings a purity of tone that will not buckle under the vocal demands of this part. A 20-year-old Plácido Domingo gets some valuable stage time as L'incredibile and L'abate.

For fans of Di Stefano and Gonzalez
This recording should be of interest to fans of Di Stefano and anyone curious about Gonzalez. They sing their parts well, and Di Stefano had one of the most beautiful post WWII voices. His downfall, so to speak, was moving from lyric to more dramatic roles such as this one (where the action and money is), somewhat parallel to the career path of Carreras. My main reason for downgrading the rating is the sound. It's rather muddy although both leads come through when belting out the famous arias. To use the old cliche, definitely not a first choice for those seeking a "grail" performance, but it should be of interest to fans of the leads. The rest of the cast was adequate, but I didn't find them particularly memorable.
