Giordano: Andrea Chénier - Corelli, Stella, Bastianini; de Fabritiis. Venezia, 1961

    • As I'm sitting here in quarantine, I can't help but fantasize about what it must have been like to be in Venice, strolling along the canals, on my way to see Andrea Chénier with three of the greatest singers of the 20th century, and arguably the greatest conductor of Italian opera ever.
    • Franco Corelli attacks the formidable title role with the kind of full-throated singing that has all but vanished from the operatic stage.
    • Antonietta Stella's luscious soprano is perfect as Maddalena. What is particularly striking is how uniformly beautiful her voice is in every part of her range, from her rich chest tones, to her gleaming top.
Ettore Bastianini brings tortured elegance to the role of Gérard.
