Andrea Chénier
Umberto Giordano (1867–1948)
DESCRIPTION
This German-language performance of Andrea Chénier opts for a cultivated refinement, drawing out the score’s inherent elegance rather than indulging in the heightened emotionalism typically associated with verismo. Maud Cunitz offers a performance marked by pristine security and a gleaming top register, shaping her phrases with commendable nuance and control. Karl Friedrich is less subtle by comparison, but nonetheless demonstrates firm command of the role’s demands. Karl Kronenberg, as Gérard, shows signs of vocal fatigue, which somewhat diminishes the character’s natural magnetism; still, his experience is evident in the assured way he handles the part’s vocal architecture.
One of the recording’s more compelling aspects is the inclusion of a young Christa Ludwig, cast in the dual roles of Bersi and Madelon. The two characters couldn’t be more different, and without prior knowledge of the casting, one would scarcely suspect they were sung by the same performer. Ludwig shades her voice with impressive sensitivity, attuned to the contrasting life experiences of both women.
