Georg Solti’s conducting career came of age as a world of possibilities was opening up in recording technology and among his many contributions to the world of music, his vision of how to utilize the technological wizardry available for the first time allowed him to define the genre of recorded operas. However, due to his meticulous nature, finding the result that pleased him in the studio often meant take after take which inevitably came at the price of the artistic spontaneity for both the singers and occasionally Solti himself. This compilation of live recordings shows what a different creature Solti was when he was on the podium of an opera house and demonstrates the energy he could summon from the orchestra and the singers which he never quite surpassed in his studio recordings (as exciting as they were in their own right.)
