In the 1960s, Leonie Rysanek sang a few performances of La Forza del destino at the Met, though no recordings of those performances exist. This recording, however, offers a glimpse into what those might have sounded like through the voice of her sister, Lotte Rysanek, whose uncanny vocal resemblance brings added fascination. While Lotte’s instrument was more lyrical in nature, she had the vocal reserves to meet the demands of Verdi’s big roles. Her phrasing is exquisitely shaped, and her voice's natural lyricism often invites the question of whether she might have been the true vocal standout in the family.
