An excellent version of this opera. Better than the commercial discs I have.Caballe is in her prime and the Mezzo, Chookasian, whom I had never heard before was a very pleasant surprise. Oncina also in great voice. Sound is very good.As mentioned previously, the last track on disc one is faulty but seems to have been repeated on the first track of disc two, so it is not a problem. Very happy with my purchase.

Caballe in Excelsis!

Montserrat Caballe was only 32 when she sang this performance, given not long after her break-through as Lucrezia Borgia in which she replaced (at nearly the last minute) an indisposed Marilyn Horne. She is marvelous from start to finish, the tone beautiful and free, the high notes glowing, the passagework precise. Perhaps more telling is her complete involvement in the role of Elisabetta. The final scene, in particular, finds her at her zenith. The audience goes nuts at the end and so will you.Juan Oncina sings the title role capably with the liquid tone for which he was so well-known. His top was limited, but Devereux doesn't require any extremely high notes so he's on safe ground. Walter Aliberti is a good Nottingham, his rough-and-ready timbre suited to the cranky, jealous Duke. His diction is especially good. In a role that was out of her usual Fach, Lili Chookasian sings Sara very attractively with a good sense of the bel canto style. But the evening belongs to Caballe. The sound is very good though occasionally the voices go slightly off-mic (this was a concert performance: did the singers turn upstage?). There is some wobbly tape at the beginning of Devereux's big Act Three scene; fortunately, it is brief and doesn't affect Oncina's voice. When you get to the end of disc one, skip the last track and begin the second disc: an editing error causes some music to be repeated. All Caballe fans should have this performance.

An exciting concert performance of the opera with Caballe in incandescent form and a fine Roberto from Oncina with Cillario propelling Donizetti's score with aplomb.
