Maria Stuarda

Leyla Gencer and Shirley Verrett are a formidable pairing in this performance of Maria Stuarda, each bringing vocal finesse and commanding power to their roles. Their confrontation scene crackles with intensity—both musically and dramatically—offering one of the opera's most thrilling moments.

Franco Tagliavini is a warm and lyrical Leicester, his elegant phrasing and refined tone adding a welcome contrast to the high-stakes drama between the two queens.

Classic Performance, Great Sound with One Glitch!

This is a classic performance that has been around on the pirate circuit for years. Gencer and Verrett sing like Prima Donnas in the best sense and bring out the best in each other. Gencer's "vil bastarda" in her denunciation of Elisabetta is so stinging it prompts applause. Her high D at the end of Act Two demolishes the competition. Verrett makes Elisabetta a real presence, matching Gencer in venom and vitality. Tagliavini sings extremely well and the two baritones are equally superb. Molinari-Pradelli leads an exciting, memorable performance. The sound is excellent - except for a Pitch Glitch on disc one. Between the end of track 15 and the beginning of track 16 the pitch audibly goes up. I'm not speaking of the music itself. This should've been fixed before release. It is not present in other releases of this performance.Other than that, highly recommended to all bel canto lovers!
