Maria Stuarda

Janet Baker takes command in the title role, her trademark sumptuous tone joined by an unexpectedly fiery dramatic intensity. Opposite her, Pauline Tinsley proves an ideal partner, matching Baker in vocal agility and power throughout. The chemistry between these two remarkable artists makes for a gripping performance, beautifully captured in excellent sound.

Mary Stuart at the London Coliseum

I saw this performance and it was one of the greatest experiences in my life. Although Dame Janet was the big name, Pauline Tinsley was on top form (is she ever anything else!) as Queen Elizabeth 1st and WAS queen Elizabeth! She was nervous, twitched at her pearls and gave an absolutely stunning performance. That is not in any way to belittle the Mary of Dame Janet Baker. She sang the role wonderfully and brought tears to your eyes with the pathos of her singing and acting! The highlight of the opera was the confrontation of the two queens, where Mary calls Elizabeth "The daughter of a whore and a vile bastard" You will never hear the likes of this again!
