Both Divas in competition form
The performance is excellent - extremely well sung by both ladies - one can hear them goading each other splendidly dramatically and vocally in the confrontation scene. Beverley Sills may be an acquired taste for some but there is no denying her musicality and total identification with this role. Pauline Tinsley matches her as an indomitable Queen Elizabeth firing off the coloratura with splendid aplomb and conviction. This really is how bel canto opera should be - all the time and not the pale reflection we have these days. The supporting cast is splendid too and the conducting sympathetic and where need be, theatrically astute and dramatic. I loved it and it is only let down (hence 4 stoars) by the rather dim and distant sound. However the ear soon adjusts but would that this exciting performance was delivered in sonic splendour!!
