Roberta Peters plays Lucia without the specificity of Sills or the elegiac quality that Callas brought to the role. In other words, she plays the role as it would've been played, generally speaking, back when she was learning her craft, similar to Pons or Pagliughi, but more involved than either. Her singing remains fresh with lovely trills and fluent coloratura though her tonic high notes tend to get drowned out by the orchestra (the end of "Spargi d'amaro" is disappointing in this respect). Her colleagues are dependable if routine. Guarrera bullies his way through Enrico's music effectively while Densen gets a well-deserved big hand for his aria in Act 3. Campora is singing a role that, by that time, was too high for him despite downward transpositions in the last scene. He is plagued with intonation problems throughout, his top register refusing to cooperate. The other singers are good and Moresco keeps things moving.The sound is on pitch, the voices audible. There is a chatty lady who insists on talking over the music that begins each scene; she finally settles down.For fans of the singers.
