• The casting of Lily Pons and Plácido Domingo seems pretty improbably, but you did indeed read correctly, and this May/December pairing still manages to ignite all the passion in Donizetti's score.
• At 21 years old, Plácido Domingo displays a voice and artistic temperament well beyond his years.
• At 64, it would be unreasonable to expect Lily Pons to be able to replicate the genius of her youth, but she still manages very impressive coloratura and shows no signs of trouble with the top of her voice. She even takes the first aria up a half-step!
