This delightful performance of L'elisir d'amore captures a cast of legendary singers at the height of their powers. José Carreras exudes youthful energy as Nemorino, and his pristine voice navigates the treacherous role with remarkable ease. His darker-toned tenor lends the character an unexpected leading man quality, providing a welcome counterbalance to Nemorino's guileless nature. Ileana Cotrubas matches Carreras in both charm and vocal finesse. Ingvar Wixell brings robust swagger to Belcore, while the combination of Geraint Evans's flawless vocal production and prodigious comic instincts makes him a Dulcamara for the ages, even if his interpretation lacks a certain degree of Italianate authenticity. John Pritchard leads a tidy yet thoroughly musical performance.

Wonderful performance of a wonderful opera
Ileana Cotrubas was one of the first singers I discovered when I first started listening to opera as a teenager. My love for her has only grown over the years. Because of her, I purchased Pritchard’s commercial recording of “L’elisir d’amore” shortly after it was released. It remains my favorite recording of one of my favorite operas. I have known for years that the recording was based on a Covent Garden production with the same cast except Domingo for Carerras. I was thrilled to learn there was a recording of a live performance of this production and couldn’t wait until it was released! Although the recording was made by someone in the audience, anyone who is used to these “pirate” recordings should have no trouble with the sound quality. There is minimal audience conversation, and only during the applause. My only disappointment is that the sound becomes more recessed at the beginning of “Prendi per me” lasting until the end of the opera, but it’s still very listenable. I agree with everything in the description about the singers and the performance. Highly recommended.
