His darker-toned tenor lends the character an unexpected leading man quality, providing a welcome counterbalance to Nemorino's guileless nature. Ileana Cotrubas matches Carreras in both charm and vocal finesse. Ingvar Wixell brings robust swagger to Belcore, while the combination of Geraint Evans's flawless vocal production and prodigious comic instincts makes him a Dulcamara for the ages, even if his interpretation lacks a certain degree of Italianate authenticity. John Pritchard leads a tidy yet thoroughly musical performance.
