Il Borgomastro di Saardam
Though Il Borgomastro di Saardam is one of Gaetano Donizetti's earlier operas, he was already an accomplished composer, having written 11 operas before this work. Musically, it leans toward Gioachino Rossini's influence rather than the forward-looking style that would later shape Giuseppe Verdi's output. Still, Donizetti's own signature elements are present throughout.
Set in the Dutch town of Saardam, the opera follows the disguised Russian Tsar Peter the Great as he works incognito in a shipyard to learn the trade of shipbuilding. His presence causes confusion, particularly for the bumbling mayor, who mistakes him for a troublesome peasant. Meanwhile, romance and mistaken identities fuel the comedic elements, leading to a lively resolution where Peter's true identity is revealed, much to the astonishment of the townspeople.
The cast is strong, with Philip Langridge standing out as the most intriguing performer. While he would later inherit the mantle of Peter Pears, here he proves himself fully capable of navigating the demands of bel canto. Renato Capecchi injects his usual boisterous energy into Vambett, though it is unfortunate that the role doesn't allow him to unleash the full power of his formidable bass voice.
