Luciano Pavarotti always said that Nemorino was one of his favorite parts. Here he is joined by his childhood friend, Mirella Freni and the two of them sound like they are having a great time. Almost as important in opera buffa as the singing (which here is exceptional) is the energy on stage. Without that it dies. In this performance you can feel in come from both sides of the proscenium. Bernd Weikl is a swaggering Belcore and Giuseppe Taddei gives a wonderfully charming portrayal of Dulcamara. The sound is quite good.
