Gwyneth Jones

In Paris

DESCRIPTION

Gwyneth Jones would later attract criticism for the steely edge that emerged in her vast soprano, though her admirers often insisted it lent an unmistakable power to roles such as Elektra and Brünnhilde in Götterdämmerung. Heard here in the 1960s, however, the voice is pristine—capable of finely shaded lyricism in Verdi as well as the surging dramatic force demanded by Wagner. The album presents two recital programs devoted to these composers and concludes with a radiant account of the Liebestod, recorded some thirteen years before she would undertake the full role of Isolde.
