The argument between the respective value of words and music in opera is as old as the art form itself, however the truly initiated understand that the magic of opera cannot be distilled by some ratio between the two. Opera truly comes alive when the beauty of the voice is enhanced by the connection to the text and vice versa. Virginia Zeani’s career exemplifies this synergy perfectly. Her shimmering auburn soprano could have easily placed her firmly in the operatic firmament, but she also brought a deep and innate ability to connect with her characters in a way that almost made you forget the beauty of her voice. I am very pleased to celebrate this great singer on her 90th birthday with this compilation featuring Zeani in excerpts from Aida, Maria di Rohan, Manon, Manon Lescaut, Busoni’s Turandot, Dialogues of the Carmelites and L’Amore dei tre re.
