Shirley Verrett
Shirley Verrett was a singer who could not only sing everything, regardless of the range, but more often than not left you thinking you had just heard the greatest interpretation of that role that has ever existed. While creating this compilation, I kept having that feeling—whether it was her Didon in Les Troyens, her Lady Macbeth, or her Carmen, the effect was the same: definitive.
This collection features excerpts from Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Rossini's Stabat Mater, Mosè, Maria Stuarda, La Favorita, Les Troyens, Carmen, Macbeth, Un Ballo in maschera, Il Trovatore, Aida, and Don Carlo. She is joined by Leyla Gencer, Franco Corelli, James King, and Amedeo Zambon.

NO ONE like Shirley Verrett
It is so wonderful and valuable to have this collection of stunning performances by one of my most revered artists growing up. The first Azucena I heard was the 1971 Met broadcast with Tucker, Arroyo and Merrill. And then there was Shirley Verrett. So stunning and forceful is her assumption of this great role, I felt spoilt for life. There was no one with such a powerful, gleaming and crazed performance. All the other roles on these cds are superb. And the glimpse of the Carmen with Corelli makes me realize, yet again, that I felt she was unparalleled in this role, too. The reviewer who spotted Elena Obratsova as Ulrica is very correct to my ears. A wonderful performance to be sure, yet I would have liked some of Verrett's Amelia from 1978. That would be a nice rounding out of her Verdi assumptions.

Amazing renditions, some of them really rare treasures, like the famous Florence Carmen with Corelli.....Anyway in the Ballo in Maschera from La Scala, she is not singing Ulrica, but Obratzova does;)
