There have only been a few sopranos who can claim to have truly distinguished themselves in both bel canto as well as dramatic roles. There have certainly been many who have tried, but even a great like Birgit Nilsson never sounded completely at home in Verdi in the same way she did in Wagner. Rita Hunter was a notable exception. Her voice had an ease of production that made her an ethereal Norma as well as significant heft which made her an impactful Brünnhilde. What was so wonderful about this artist is that her vocal production was so consistent no matter what the demands of the opera allowing her, for example, to imbue Brünnhilde’s music with bel canto finesse without shortchanging the dramatic vocal demands of the role. We are remembering this great artist with this compilation that features her in excerpts from Le Nozze di Figaro, Il Trovatore, Don Carlo, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung.
