I am at a loss to try to sum up Renata Tebaldi's genius except to say that it was absolute. It is easy to isolate her sterling voice, but she also brought an Italian sensibility the likes of which they don't seem to make any more, and remarkable musicianship (I have never come across a performance in which she gets off musically.) A moment that reaffirmed my love for her while making this compilation was in the final scene of Madama Butterfly. She lets out a sob at the sight of her child running in that seems to come from the depths of her soul. It is truly heartbreaking. At nearly two hours of music, this compilation is one of the most complete overviews of Tebaldi's career ever made. It includes arias and excerpts from La Forza del destino, Otello, Falstaff, La Bohème, Madama Butterfly, La Fanciulla del West, Tosca, Gianni Schicchi, Paride ed Elena, Giulio Cesare, Manon, Tannhäuser, Lohengrin, La Gioconda, and Andrea Chénier.
