I am slightly ashamed that it took me so long to create a compilation featuring Renata Scotto. The upside in waiting is that I was able to choose from many fascinating performances accumulated over the seven years we have been around. What struck me initially while revisiting all of this material is how prodigious she was. Even in her twenties she was making sophisticated choices and taking chances that would intimidate many established singers. It is also remarkable how she was able to sell almost every role she did even if on paper it may not have been a great fit. For example, as Leonora, she deftly focuses on the coloratura and never pushes her voice beyond its means. These excerpts feature Scotto at her best, and they will hopefully serve as a reminder of what a great artist she was. It includes arias from Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Norma, Zaira, La Straniera, Lucia di Lammermoor, L'Elisir d'amore, Maria di Rohan, I Vespri Siciliani, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Un Ballo in maschera, Philémon et Baucis, Carmen and Madama Butterfly.
