Plácido Domingo
This compilation offers over two hours of Domingo in some of his most celebrated roles, including selections from Tosca, Manon Lescaut, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci, and Otello. It also features rare excerpts, such as arias from Lohengrin, Rigoletto, and Elijah, along with a unique recording of Domingo in a comprimario role—Incredibile’s aria from Andrea Chénier.

While there are items of great interest in understanding the emerging artist on disc one, disc two is where the real pleasure of this compilation lies. Yes, Domingo had the artistry, technique and intelligence to sing an extraordinarily broad range of roles, but what this compilation helps flesh out is how his lower centered, virile, dramatic, baritonal tenor truly shone in the roles best suited to him. The Lohengrin excerpts on disc two are superb both for ease of emission and interpretation, not to mention that the sound for these cuts is excellent. The Cavalleria, Pagliacci and Otello excerpts are excellent, as well.
