Piero Cappuccilli

Although he was certainly celebrated in his day, I never really understood why Piero Cappuccilli didn't obtain the star status that someone like Sherrill Milnes did. He was, in fact, the ideal Verdi baritone possessing a voice that could manage the dramatic bombast of Iago's music in Otello as well as the delicate lyricism of Rodrigo in Don Carlo. If this collection does even a little to remind opera fans of what a colossal talent Cappuccilli was, then I will be very pleased. It contains arias and excerpts from Don Giovanni, I Puritani, I Vespri Siciliani, Luisa Miller, Simon Boccanegra, Macbeth, La Traviata, Il Trovatore, Un Ballo in maschera, Aida, Don Carlo and Otello and he is joined by Montserrat Caballé, Mirella Freni, Plácido Domingo, Gianni Raimondi, Alfredo Kraus, Nicolai Ghiaurov, and Ruggero Raimondi.

Moving nostalgia trip

Cappuccilli was my favourite Verdi baritone of his generation, and I count myself lucky to have heard him a couple of times at Covent Garden. He made several complete studio recordings (most notably a wonderful Rigoletto for DG with Giulini) but there are not many compilation albums available, so this generous selection from Opera Depot is very welcome. Occasionally a close-up cough discloses the clandestine nature of the original recording, but it’s easy to listen past those brief distractions to a singer who will forever occupy a special place in the finest tradition of bel canto.
