One of the best ways to test the sensibility and taste of any opera fan is to find out if they appreciate the artistry of Magda Olivero. Hers was (is) a voice whose beauty does not necessarily grab you at the first hearing. It takes a more concentrated listening to truly appreciate the depth of interpretation she brought to her roles. This compilation has a wonderful assortment of some of her greatest moments from operas like Mefistofele, Butterfly, Medea, Adriana Lecouvreur, and La Fanciulla del West. But my most favorite moment is her bone chilling accounting of Kostelnicka's act II monologue from Jenufa (just listen to the sample.) It is truly a portrait of a woman cracking under the pressures of Victorian prudishness. Magda, I wish you another 100 years!
