Ludmila Dvořáková’s voice defied conventional vocal reason. Her slavic soprano had the richness of a mezzo but yet she could navigate even the thorniest of the many technical traps Wagner sets for his sopranos. Her voice also had an alluring beauty which could stand up to the most dramatic moments in in the Ring Cycle, making for a Brünnhilde who was both formidable and feminine at the same time. It is unfortunate that she had to compete with the likes of Birgit Nilsson who had the Wagnerian market more or less cornered. I am happy to offer some rare excerpts from Fidelio, Katerina Ismailova, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan und Isolde and Götterdämmerung.
