Jon Vickers

Jon Vickers’ voice and artistry were beyond classification. The power of his massive tenor coupled with his remarkable technique meant that he could sing Wagner with finesse and musicality, as well as bring dramatic heft to the more refined world of French opera. The voice was neither Italianate nor Germanic—it was just “Vickers,” and he approached each role he sang with intelligence and searing intensity.

This compilation offers many of his great triumphs like Peter Grimes, Enée in Les Troyens, and Siegmund, as well as some interesting rarities including Tarquinius’ aria from The Rape of Lucretia and a brutal Herod from Salome.

A broad spectrum from England to Russia

The double album covers two decades of Jon Vickers' operatic career (1957-1976) and offers a broad cross-section: Beethoven, Berlioz, Verdi, Britten, Tchaikovsky, Strauss, Leoncavallo, Wagner. Although he has always sung very powerfully, his voice seems to have changed little: His Siegmund of 1961 sounds just as fresh as his Tristan of 1976. A rarity is the eruptive aria of Hermann, on the verge of madness, from Tchaikovsky's "Queen of Spades," sung in English. However, the technical quality is not good in several pieces. But in any case it is enough to give a realistic picture of his vocal power.

Quite good

This is a lovely compilation. I’ve only been able to listen to the MP3 (as I’ve not been home to pick up the cd yet). With that said, there are some inconsistencies with the sound quality from track to track, which is to be expected. All in all, though, some great recordings from this wonderful tenor.
