Not only Wagner hero, but also "italianità"
James King became famous in the roles for Heldentenor in Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. Rare are the testimonies from the beginning of his opera career, when he also took on Italian roles, especially on German and Austrian stages. The present CD documents Macduff's lament from Verdi's Macbeth as well as the two arias and the first great duet from Tosca (with Leonie Rysanek - however, the sound quality here is not good). In the sixties his voice was much more flexible than in his Wagner years, it certainly had the Italianità for these roles, its melancholic touch reminiscent of Franco Corelli. The live recordings of his proven Heldentenor roles are also excellent: Samson, Kaiser (Frau ohne Schatten), Siegmund and Parsifal.

Wonderful to have this. Highlights for me were the Wagner, Strauss and Beethoven in which he ranks among the best. The MacBeth aria is gorgeous!
