Description:
For the most part, I create these compilations as tributes to singers I have admired for years. However, in putting together this retrospective of Boris Christoff, I wanted to take the time to explore an artist I had only known peripherally and had never truly considered in depth. I’ll admit I began with certain preconceptions shaped by his larger-than-life persona—after all, one can’t help but picture the imposing figure with the pointy beard. Such a grandiose presence seems almost a requirement for portraying tsars and kings.
What surprised me, though, was how much more there was to Christoff’s artistry than just bombast and spectacle. His portrayal of characters like Boris Godunov is fascinating because he reveals not only their grandeur but also their humanity, exposing the frailties that make them deeply relatable.
Even more surprising was discovering his lighter side, evident in his performances of Rocco’s aria from Fidelio and Kaspar’s arias from Der Freischütz. These moments showcase a versatility that adds new dimensions to his artistry.
I’m proud to present what I believe to be the most comprehensive glimpse of Christoff’s artistry available today. The sound quality is good.
Featuring arias and excerpts from Norma, Nabucco, Don Carlo, Fidelio, Der Freischütz, Parsifal, Le Coq d'or, Mazeppa, Ivan the Terrible and Boris Godunov
