Francesco Cilea’s Gloria struggled at its 1907 premiere, even under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Whether the piece succeeds dramatically is difficult to judge from this recording, but Cilea’s compositional mastery is undeniable. Though a relatively short work, it brims with sweeping melodies and provides ample opportunity for great singers to shine.

This cast rises to the challenge. Margherita Roberti, in the title role, delivers both vocal beauty and intense spirit. As Lionetto, Flaviano Labò meets the role’s dramatic demands without sacrificing the natural sweetness of his voice. The sound quality is decent, though transferred from LP, with some residual surface noise.
