Gloria
Francesco Cilea's Gloria struggled at its 1907 premiere, even under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. Whether the piece succeeds dramatically is difficult to judge from this recording, but Cilea's compositional mastery is undeniable. Though a relatively short work, it brims with sweeping melodies and provides ample opportunity for great singers to shine.
This cast rises to the challenge. Margherita Roberti, in the title role, delivers both vocal beauty and intense spirit. As Lionetto, Flaviano Labò meets the role's dramatic demands without sacrificing the natural sweetness of his voice.

Excellent Performance of an Underrated Opera!
Cilea is basically known for one opera, Adriana Lecouvreur, perhaps two if one includes the rarely performed L'Arlesiana. Gloria has seen a few revivals lately and it deserves to be better known. The plot is relatively uncomplicated using the familiar formula of soprano and tenor love each other, but are thwarted by baritone. Set against a background of quarreling families seeking revenge it makes its mark with lyrical melodies and passionate, Mafia-like characters.Margherita Roberti (i.e. Margaret Roberts from Iowa) sings the title role with authority and love. Cilea gives her a high C ending to Act 2 and a moving death scene (by suicide when her new husband dies after being stabbed by her baritone brother). With his burnished, attractive, Italianate timbre Labò shows why opera houses sat up and took notice. Testi is good as Gloria's spoilsport brother though he doesn't provide much tonal variety (he sang Enrico to Sutherland's Met debut Lucia in 1961). Rota sings exactly two lines in Act 2, but makes the most of them. Previtali keeps everything together well.The sound is very good. LP lovers will enjoy the surface noise that comes with the performance (no skips or pops though). There is an Italian/English libretto available online.If you enjoy Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur or Zandonai's Francesca da Rimini, you'll love this.
