Medea is a fearsome figure in Greek mythology so it's no surprise that there are many operatic versions of the story. Cherubini's setting has its thrilling moments, but also some paint-by-number moments that make one want to fast forward. It's a pity most of us know this opera by this bowlderized version in an Italian translation and with boring recitatives by Lachner.One needs a riveting singing actress to make this opera "go" and Rysanek is certainly that. I would love to hear her sing/declaim a version auf Deutsch, but that's not this one. She controls herself while singing with ferocity and passion. Luchetti is a good, occasionally off-pitch Giasone and Denise is a heartbreaking Neris. Petkov sings well, but how did he get into this mix? Cuccaro is a fluent, if shrill Glauce. The other parts are all done very well. Baudo leads an exciting performance. This sounds like it may have been a radio concert performance. The sound is excellent with the voices very forward and present. Rysanek lovers will want this!

Here is a very powerful performance of MEDEA with the unusual casting of Rysanek in a classic role. The sound is very good and there are strong performances from Denise, Cuccaro, Luchetti and Petkov. Rysanek sings with great power and dramatic excitement. The voice is not always under perfect control but it is always exciting. Rysanek is a law unto herself and that is the quality that grabs the ear and holds you for the ride. There is nothing generic here but something completing unique and fascinating.

It's little known that Leonie Rysanek sang Mozart roles (including Elettra in "Idomeneo") in the early years of her career. Here she harnesses her powerful voice to the demands of Classical style. She gets capital support from Veriano Luchetti, a sturdy Jason, and Nadine Denize, who provides a sterling account of Neris' aria. Constanza Cuccaro sparkles in Glauce's solo. Indeed, only Dimiter Petkov's stiff Creon disappoints. Serge Baudo's conducting makes a persuasive argument for the score.
