Medea
Luigi Cherubini (1760–1842)
DESCRIPTION
Maralin Niska may not have enjoyed international celebrity, but for New York City audiences, she was unquestionably a commanding presence. In this performance of Medea, she ignites the stage in the title role, delivering a portrayal that embraces heightened drama without compromising the classical integrity of Cherubini’s score. Her interpretation—tense, expressive, and vocally committed—offers a strikingly persuasive alternative to more storied portrayals, and might well have held its own alongside that of Callas.
The supporting cast proves solid, with a young Samuel Ramey making a notable impression as Creonte, his bass already displaying the authority and resonance that would later define his career. Erik Townsend, as Giasone, is less convincing; his under-energized delivery lacks the vitality needed to anchor the character, a shortcoming made more visible in contrast to Niska’s intensity.
