Sizzling Medea from Buenos Aires!
Dame Gwyneth made a studio recording of Medea for Decca right around the time of this performance and it's good, if a little lacking in fire and passion. This performance captures the fire missing in the studio. Jones' singing may not be perfect (although still very accomplished), but she pleads, snarls, and gloats with a ferocity that could not be captured in the staid confines of the studio.The rest of the cast is excellent. Cossutta is a perfect schmuck of a Giasone, Diaz actually makes something of Creon (a part that usually goes for nothing), and Marimpietri is a lovely Glauce. Norma Lerer sings Neris' big aria with true distinction. Previtali conducts a well-paced performance that made me admire the opera more than I had previously.The sound is excellent. If Jones or Medea is a favorite of yours, you need this.

Jones magnificent as ever
Gwyneth Jones is in fresh, vibrant voice as she delivers an affecting and characteristically well-imagined performance in what have been one of her last Medeas. Although Norma Lerer's Neris is only average the remainder of the supporting cast is worthy of Jones and Fernando Previtali keeps things moving. The mono broadcast sound is clear, if occasionally overloaded.
