La Wally
Although the love from the audience is intense, Renata Tebaldi is not heard at her best as Wally. The top of her voice feels precarious, making it hard to fully relax when she sings. Still, the richness of her middle voice, aided by the role's lower tessitura, allows her to carry much of the performance with grace. Carlo Bergonzi brings remarkable ease and élan to the demanding role of Giuseppe Hagenbach. While La Wally may never musically match the promise of its most famous aria, "Ebben? Ne andrò lontana," it remains a brilliant showcase for great singers. As Gellner, Peter Glossop seizes the opportunity, turning his show-stopping moments into dramatic highlights.

Exciting Performance in Good Sound!
La Wally was an opera that Tebaldi liked to champion from early on in her career (there is a performance from La Scala 1953 that is hair-raising). She finally recorded the role in the studio the same year as this performance. Andy mentions above that her top notes could be precarious by this point in her career, but except for a less than stellar high B at the close of the big aria in Act One, she is in sturdy shape. She certainly doesn't spare her voice Wally's shriek as Hagenbach is overtaken by the avalanche in the last act. The audience adores her; so will you.Bergonzi is superb in an underwritten role. His final aria stops the show for a minute or so. Glossop is excellent in another underwritten role, Gellner, possibly the most conflicted character in the opera. Corena makes a lot of his role as the town drunk and Penagos sings Walter with skill and lyricism. Cleva keeps everything together handily. The chorus and orchestra contribute strongly. The sound is good, probably better with headphones. I don't know where the tapist sat, but Tebaldi and Bergonzi are always on mic while everyone else sounds a little off to the side.If you're a Tebaldi or Bergonzi fan, you should have this. Catalani's score is very beautiful and these singers do it justice.
