La Wally
Magda Olivero will always represent, for me, the highest standard of Italian style. There are many other sopranos whose voices I have preferred, but few possessed her ability to shape a musical line and communicate with such conviction. Her performances were consistently direct and emotionally immediate without ever becoming exaggerated or self-conscious. In this recording, made when she was already in her sixties, she sings with a command that many celebrated artists never achieved at half her age.
Before hearing this performance, I had very little experience with this opera. I was surprised to discover that it offers far more than its famous aria. The score is richly orchestrated, drawing on both German and French influences to create an especially lush musical language. The recorded sound is also very good.

3 stars for the opera, not the recording
I bought this recording in a spirit of adventurousness. A half-price sale and rum may have been involved. I have to say, don’t see what Toscanini saw in this opera. Still, there’s Olivero. Andy says she was in her sixties, which makes her not just good, but astounding. Sound is very good—lots of stage noise and coughing, but as another reviewer notes, that just makes it live!

As expected, Olivero's voice is responsive to character and the drama at hand. The rather dark timbre of her voice foreshados the cumulative tragedy. The rest of the cast is quite vocally and dramatically dedicated in this performance. The sound is just fine. There is lots of live stage business, but I like tha- especially now as attending live performances is such a hassle during pandemic.

La Wally is Catalani's most famous opera, highly regarded by Toscanini.It's discography is small with one studio recording and a number of live performances of which this one is arguably the most satisfying.Magna Olivero is La Wally. Here at the age of 61 her voice seems undiminished. Her plangent sound vibrates with feeling giving a compelling picture of the untamed Wally. Her Hagenbach is the admirable Amadeo Zambon sounding uncannily like a young Mario del Monaco. The top notes burnished and resonant. The Gellner, Silvano Carroli with his warm Italinate voice completes this admirable trio of leading singers.The two great basses Zaccaria and Foiani in minor roles contribute considerably to this fine recording.An oddity: Hagenbach's music in the final scene is marred by the damaging loss of half his aria: "M'hai salvato" which is then given as a bonus!The sound is very good.
