Gloriana
Gloriana is quickly becoming one of my favorite Britten operas. Britten brilliantly recreates the sound and feel of the Elizabethan court while still maintaining his unique voice and creating dramatic confrontations that are quintessentially of the 20th century. Sylvia Fisher is a power-house in the title role, creating a fascinating psychological profile of a woman who was both blood-thirsty and quite fragile. As Essex, John Wakefield displays a pleasing tenor but he lacks gravitas which is all too apparent in his scenes with Fisher. A young Donald McIntyre stands out as Mountjoy as does Don Garrard as Sir Walter Raleigh.

This is what Gloriana is about, great singing from all the cast. Fisher is amazing in this and everyone should hear it.It's even better than the Royal Festival Hall performance she sang with Pears as Essex.I love John Wakefield in anything, but there again he was my singing teacher away back in the 70's and 1980.

This is the production, by Colin Graham, that re-launched Gloriana in the theatre after several years in the doldrums. It was a brilliant production which survived in the repertory for nearly 20 years. This original production also marked the return to the stage in a major role by Sylvia Fisher after a few years of semi-retirement following ill-advised forays into Turandot and Isolde. She now re-established herself as a fine character performer. Recommended.
