Albert Herring
This recording from the English Opera Group, Britten's hand-picked troupe, goes a long way to advocate for the merits of Britten's comic opera. Kenneth MacDonald brings an attractive and youthful voice to the title role. The supporting ensemble cast of colorful characters is well assembled, with Sylvia Fisher standing out as Lady Billows. Fisher brings a formidable mixture of Brünnhilde and Margaret Dumont to the role.

Excellent, enjoyable Performance!
A friend of mine insists that Britten's Albert Herring is incredibly twee - and he's probably right. But that is also probably why I love it so much. The audience of this performance certainly loves what they're seeing; their laughter is one of the highlights of the recording. The entire cast is fantastic - I have no criticism of any of them. The singers all embody their roles perfectly. The sound is mostly very good though there is occasionally some mild static in a few places. There are also some short passages missing from the original tape, but you'll have to be either following the score or the libretto to catch them. If you like Albert Herring, get this. It's a real treat!

This performance is better than Britten's .It's alive, very much so.Fisher again shows how great a singer she was. Ken MacDonald shows that wonderful way of making his voice suit the role, he did that in everything he sang.I heard him sing Arturo in Puritani with Sutherland at the Garden.Harold Blackburn the great Scottish Bass in one of a few live performance from him on disc.The whole cast brims with fun and you can hear the audience enjoying themselves.This is the only time I've enjoyed this opera and shall listen often to this recording.
