Mefistofele

With Carlo Bergonzi, Raina Kabaivanska, and Nicolai Ghiaurov in the principal roles, this performance of Mefistofele offers a cast of near-definitive stature.

Bergonzi sings Faust with his trademark elegance and effortless phrasing, navigating the role's challenges with poise and lyricism. Ghiaurov, captured here at the height of his powers, delivers a Mephistopheles of commanding presence—his voice booming, opulent, and darkly seductive. Kabaivanska brings radiant tone and emotional depth to Margarita, evoking shades of Magda Olivero in her expressiveness and sensitivity.

Exciting Performance in Excellent Sound!

Some people consider this opera a guilty pleasure and I admit I love it. It may not be whatever a masterpiece is supposed to be, but it comes close and is a lot of fun. It can be very moving too with the right cast and it has that here. Ghiaurov justifies his reputation as the eponymous anti-hero, singing lustily and beautifully. Bergonzi was always great in this opera with his stylish, mellifluous voice and Kabaivanska is heartbreaking as Margarita, the young woman who said yes to the wrong man. Linda Vajna is a vivid Elena, making a strong impression with the little she is given to do. Gavazzeni demonstrates again why he was considered a master of Italian opera conducting. The chorus and orchestra perform with passion and strength. The sound is excellent, very clear and forward. This may have been transferred from LPs, but there are no loud pops or skips. The audience loved this performance and so will you!
