Pros:

  • Despite the provincial nature of the chorus and orchestra, the cast of this performance of Carmen would blow out of the water any you could ever hope to hear at an opening night of a world-class opera house today.
  • Tatiana Troyanos brings luscious, sultry tones to the title role, as well as fierce intenisty in the final scene.
  • As Micaëla, Ellen Shade's ample voice has the perfect combination of power and lyricism and she nearly steals the show in her aria.
  • Jean Bonhomme's Don José gets high marks for power but low marks for refinement. Still, he is able to match Troyanos in the final scene which is no small feat.

Cons:

  • The sound captures a lot of noise from the audience, but the voices still come through pretty well.
