The more I hear from Alberto Remedios, the more I am impressed by his remarkable versatility and vocal finesse. It is all to rare to find a tenor who can come back to the lyric rep after finding renown as a Wagnerian without any sacrifice to beauty or lyricism. Remedios’ José has both intelligence and intensity and his English pronunciation is excellent. Katherine Pring, as Carmen, is slightly less vocally distinguished, but she is a committed actress and finds that sweet balance between conveying Carmen's mysteriousness yet still creating a compelling and well-rounded character that is more than just femme fatale. Margaret Curphey (you will remember her as Sieglinde from the Goodall Ring) makes much of Micaëla’s brief but important scenes. The sound is excellent.
