Les Troyens, 1969
A rarity, with Berlioz’s magnificent epic conducted by Colin Davis and sung by a distinguished cast. With the opera sung in the original French, but Janet Baker stepping into the role of Dido at short notice and singing in English, this is not a recording you will easily find. The rarity value excuses the sound quality which is typical of live recordings of the period (1969).

The transfer is pitched throughout a half-step (at leat) too low; the performance is wonderful but "transposed" so a false impression of the real singing.

All I can review is the purchase itself. So far, it has NOT been completed, since can't download the items, despite appeals for help, which have not been answered. So the review is that Opera Depot may well be a fraudulent enterprise, unless it can get its show on the road, and quickly

marvellous addition to my Troyens collection
I had the two Colin Davis boxes and the new John Nelson version. I really like this one, and the sound is fine. Silja and Baker are very good indeed as Cassandra and Dido. Thanks for making this available. It is shown on amazon in an Akardia version as order-able at several hundred dollars. Maybe AI determined the price, as it is the only copy on the amazon site. Thank you!

The Trojans
I was there. It was one of the great nights at Covent Garden with Janet Baker’s overdue debut in a major role there and Jon Vickers a superb Aeneas.The fact that she sang in English and everyone else in French added piquancy. Wonderful to have this permanent record of it.
