Berg: Wozzeck - Berry, Silja, Uhl, Krämer, Melchert; Böhm. Salzburg, 1972
$8.95
Description:
Walter Berry may well be the ideal Wozzeck. His earthy yet refined bass-baritone perfectly suits the role, striking a haunting balance between poetic sensitivity and unraveling madness. In contrast, Anja Silja brings a youthful, almost innocent quality to Marie, making her tragic fate feel especially cruel. Karl Böhm, who was a champion of Wozzeck and knew Alban Berg personally, leads the performance with remarkable clarity and emotional insight. His reading of the complex score feels utterly organic—intellectually rigorous yet never academic. The sound is generally quite good, though there is occasional ghosting that slightly affects the listening experience.
