Berg: Wozzeck (In Italian) - Gobbi, Dow, Picchi, Tajo, Cuenod; Sanzogno. Roma, 1955
Listen to a Sample:
Just when you thought you had seen everything, here is an Italian language Wozzeck with Tito Gobbi. It is a true testament to this artist that he could and would learn this role. It is a shame that he did not sing it more because it is very well suited to his baritone and his legendary acting chops. He is joined by Mirto Picchi as a dashing Drum Major. Italo Tajo as the doctor, Hugues Cuenod as the Captain and Dorothy Dow as Marie. Nino Sanzogno seems secure with the score although to my tastes the tempi can be a little slow at times. All in all the Italians show that they can interpret German Expressionism as well as anyone else. I have included a scene from Salome with Tito Gobbi and Lily Djanel. The sound is good.
