Good Performance, Mediocre Sound!
This Wozzeck comes from a time when Italian radio broadcasts were very unevenly engineered. Somehow the mics were placed in such a way that the voices were often covered by the orchestra. That's the case here. Occasionally the voices must be taken on faith as they are inaudible when the orchestra is loud. The Italian translation (accurate as far as I can tell) softens the text and the opera is less volatile as a result.Gobbi is great as Wozzeck as is Danco as Marie. All the cast members sings more beautifully than we normally hear these roles when sung auf Deutsch. If it weren't for the atonality we might be listening to Verdi. Hans Beirer is listed as singing the Drum Major, but that doesn't sound like his voice. Despite what Andy says, he sings in Italian too. Bohm's expertise with this score is much in evidence though the orchestra must have been alarmed at the score's extreme demands. The pitch of the tape source seems about right, but there are some glitches (worn tape) and brief passages of missing music (probably lost in transmission). Andy fills up the second disc with a performance of Schoenberg's Erwartung with Janis Martin doing fine work under Boulez. This suffers from some intermittent radio crackle, but it's very listenable (they recorded this commercially). For Wozzeck fans or those who want to hear Gobbi and company in some unusual roles.
